Remembrance Park at Soldier and Sailors Museum & Memorial Hall is a two acre roof garden set above an existing parking garage. In order to create an accessible entry sequence, to highlight museum artifacts and to create a space for gathering and memorial services, the design team developed a park plan that featured three primary components- the Great Lawn, the Civic Plaza, and Honor Garden.

The Great Lawn surrounded by arcing walks features commemorative integrated art. The sloping lawn houses an amphitheater with overlooks and outdoor classrooms are proposed adjacent providing spaces for programmed museum courses and street edge activation, inviting visitors onto the grounds. Remembrance Park is surrounded by the University of Pittsburgh classroom and service buildings and as such is often frequented by students who make use of the lawn as either a place to spend time or a pass through from classroom to classroom.

The civic plaza, immediately adjacent to the museum, is sized to provide ample space for memorial services, festivals, and/ or wedding receptions. The plaza will be lined by seat walls at the edge of the garden that encourage use on a day to day basis, giving visitors a space to linger and enjoy the view from the top of the site.

The Honor Garden’s planting along the perimeter consists of sweeps of native, drought tolerant grasses and perennials that provide habitat for bees, birds and butterflies while creating a native, low maintenance landscape. The formal garden area with its parterres and tree bosques is intended to be a programmatic element for veteran gardener groups that will tend the parterres in regular meet-up opportunities.
