Stargell Field

Team: Studio for Spatial Practice, Neighborhood Allies, The Mission Continues, Operation Better Block, Heinz Endowments

Client: Homewood Community Sports

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Date : 2016-2017

Stargell Field, named after Pittsburgh Pirates star, Willie Stargell, is adjacent to Homewood’s business and institutional core, within a 5 minute walk of the Carnegie Library of Homewood, the East Busway stop, the YMCA, CCAC and the Afro American Music Institute, lending the park space a large amount of foot traffic and high visibility.

Currently, the field serves both as a baseball and football field, however, the field is inadequately sized for both sports. Stargell Field is a hub of activity given the existing City of Pittsburgh pool, which is open during the summer months, and Homewood Community Sports (HCS) running its sports programs throughout the year on the field.

In past Homewood planning efforts, the publicly-owned parcel adjacent to Stargell Field, currently containing a closed school building, was designated to be converted into green space. Homewood currently lacks sizable green, recreation space. SfSP lead an engagement process with HCS and youth athletes, coaches and parents around future amenities to be included in an updated and expanded Stargell Field and aided in the determination of phasing and amenities to be incorporated into the existing field and surrounding areas. SfSP incorporated community feedback into the master plan illustrated above.
